Teaching: Book Design
As a capstone project for Typography 1 students are ask to design a 16-page book. The project is a comprehensive assignment that addresses the creation of typographic systems for organization and the combined usage of both normative and marked typography. Students are exposed to the notion of the designer as author as they are responsible for developing the concept, authoring and editing the content, and designing and producing the final piece. Students are also encouraged to utilize imagery, oftentimes creating original illustrations and photographs.
The books have been a combination of students selecting their own topics and authoring the content themselves, and utilizing found sources of content to give form to. Recently, I have had students use content from McSweeney's Internet Tendency and design a book based on themes they extract from the website.
